MISSION - Dramatically increase the number of adoptions of children waiting in North America’s foster care systems.
Core Beliefs
The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is the only public nonprofit charity in the United States that is focused exclusively on foster care adoption. Their core beliefs are as follows:
1) Every child deserves a safe, loving and permanent family.
2) No child should linger in foster care or leave the system without a permanent family.
3) Every child is adoptable.
Programs
WENDY'S WONDERFUL KIDS® - Supports the hiring adoption professionals dedicated to finding overlooked foster care children permanent families through an evidence-based, child-focused recruitment model. A five-year national evaluation published in 2011 revealed that children referred to this program are up to 3x more likely to be adopted [1].
Adoption friendly-workplace - Every year the Foundation, along with the nonprofit research institute RTI International, conduct the Best Adoption-Friendly Workplace survey to identify the most adoption-friendly workplaces. This effort is aiding in encouraging organizations to raising the bar with their adoption benefits to attract, support and retain employees.
National Adoption day - National Adoption Day is a collective effort across 400 cities throughout the United States to raise awareness of the more than 115,000 children waiting to be adopted from foster care in the United States. To date, more than 75,000 children in foster care have become adopted as part of National Adoption Day.
A Home for the Holidays - An annual primetime special on CBS features performances from some of America’s most popular music artists and shares stories of foster care adoption, in order to build awareness of the thousands of children who are waiting to be adopted from foster care. Thousands of people have been inspired to seek more information on becoming an adoptive parent as a direct result of A Home for the Holidays.
Why We Chose Them?
Charity Navigator Score
We chose to donate to Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption because they have an 'Exceptional' score by Charity Navigator, evidenced by the fact that 88.9% of the total budget goes toward foster care adoption and awareness - only 5.2% of the total budget goes towards administrative expenses and 5.7% towards fundraising expenses [2]. This means that every dollar donated goes a long way towards furthering adoption beyond the 11,000 foster care children that have been adopted to date through Wendy's Wonderful Kids Program [3].
